Heritage Pigs
raised on pasture
Our pigs are born on the farm and rotated through pastures as they grow. Their Large Black and Berkshire genetics ensure they thrive outside and love to root.
Here's what we stand for.
All our animals are raised on pesticide-free pasture in an environment as natural to their species as is possible. That means the pigs get to root and wallow, the chickens can perch and scratch, duck swim, the bees get their buzz on and our kids make a mess.
When left alone, nature has its own pace. So inspired, we don't force chemical growth hormones into our animals to get them to market faster. Wherever possible, we use traditional and herbal treatments with regular strip grazing rotations to keep our animals healthy.
It sometimes takes a little longer, but we try to locally source everything for the farm whenever possible. From new livestock, supplemental feeds and soil, through to the materials for new infrastructure, services and sage advice, we prefer to support our local community and businesses and encourage you to do the same.
As any farmer will tell you, there isn't much money in small-scale agriculture but then at Fernwood Farm, we're not trying to get rich. Our goal is to find a more sustainable and appropriate way for our family to live, to inspire ourselves and friends and perhaps to provide some really good food to our customers, farmed by our family with love.

We have a small herd of Angus and Simmental cattle for beef and livestock sales. No artifical hormones or antibiotics, organic pasture and hay.
Our chickens are fully free-ranging on open pasture, finished on organic feed and come ready to cook. Sizes range from 3lbs to 6lbs. Ducks range from 5lb - 8lb and have access to a large pond.
